HIE & Rollei IR Comparison

Yes. Both were shot on 4x5. These are very tight crops. I posted the original HEI image here in the gallery.

'Comparisons' like this make this site very interesting.

Andrew are these print or negative scans? If print scans I would have thought there would be more punch in the HIE shot. Maybe the use of a higher grade filter would boost the contrast. I agree that this comparsion is very interesting and thenk you for posting.

Both done w/ wrattan 25? 'Surprise to find somewhat sharper detail & more range in the Rollie

Interesting comparison. I´ve had similar results with Rollei IR in terms of acutance. It seems that Kodak´s HIE had a tendency for infectious development, as it has an edge glow I haven´t seen in other IR films. Ilford´s SFX is quite similar to the Rollei film, if taken with the SFX (89) Filter. Through a normal Red 25 Filter it looks like ... B&W film taken through a Red 25 Filter. Sorry, that is expensive B&W film taken through a Red 25 Filter.

I agree with Peter. The Rollei is showing appreciable "Wood" effect" with a red 25 whereas I have never really found this with Ilford SFX. I got the faintest of "glows" with Ilford and a red 25 although the skies were always much darker than a red 25 produced with "normal" films

@Vincent Brady, these are negative scans. I always developed HEI for a soft negative, as I try to get as much detail in the shadows.
@HiHoSilver, HEI was shot through the #25. Rollei was shot through a #72. I also shot HEI with the 72, but it looks identical to the #25 shot...
@Peter Rockstroh01, sometimes infectious development gets mixed up with flare, due to no anti-halation backing on HEI. I've always wanted to remove the anti-halation backing on the Rollei film, before exposing it in camera, to see if I can get more glow around the high lights.
@pentaxuser, yes EI 12 with the red 25. I'd shoot it at 100 with no filter. My last batch of HEI was shot at EI 100 with the 25.

I guess that any non-tanning developer should help getting a glow from IR-reflective surfaces. And while the red filter works fine with
the Rollei film, you need an SFX filter to really get the most out of that film. I ha no idea HIE has no anti-halation backing. No wonder you get flore marks around the image edges when you photograph with the sun at an angle !

@Peter Rockstroh01, I still get glow when developed in Pyrocat-HD. If bright objects are near the edge of the film, it bleads/flares out into the rebates. In regards to anti-halation, when I presoak HIE in water, the tray is clear. Nothing comes off that film!
