We often get bird strikes on our windows. It happens when one of these little hawks swoops in for dinner. Often the birds are just stunned, but a few are killed every year. This hawk pranged himself on the small window of our back door. I photographed his beauty before consigning him to the earth.
Hummingbirds, hiho? We've got Anna's and Rufous hummers here - and have never had a window strike. The quail hit the window often, but haven't died. The most frequent fatal strikes are siskins. We've got stickers on our big picture windows to define them for the birds, but their defence is to scatter in every direction when threatened. The death of this hawk was surprising. These things are amazingly agile. I've seen one come under the fence - a 4 inch gap - at full speed into a covey of quail. Not sure what this one was doing flying full speed into the small window of a dark back room.
If you put some stencils on the window the birds will know that it is not passable. Many high-rise buildings are now doing that. It would be a shame not to do that. - David Lyga
The windows in this house don't get hit often, but it tends to be barn swallows swooping too fast through the front porch. Our feeders are near the kitchen windows, but they don't get hit (knock on wood). The house in Iowa got hit frequently, even with bird silhouettes and other things on the windows. The most common were the robins (maybe not the smartest of birds to begin with).
