So like the picture postcards of the time. They seem to sit between photography and painting because of the texture of the grid.

This is even better. There is something missing from the 'perfection ideal' when precision, and ONLY precision, dominates. Subjectivity also has its place within the realm of image quality.

A smooth surface would have been more 'perfect' a rendition, but only objectively. As grahamp infers, the texture adds to the aesthetic desirability. - David Lyga

It's not like this any more ! It's a HUGE harbour with Cross-Channel Ferries and hundreds of Car and Lorry parks and Customs Officers looking for Illegal Immigrants!
You can see Dover Castle up on top and the famous White Cliffs.

Too true. This was made only 13 years after Dunkirk.
