Turning Cylinder Body

Turning Cylinder Body

Main body of Cylinder pattern in next image. The lathe is a Wm & John Barnes model 13 from 1916 and is flat-belt driven, hence, a small segment of lineshaft hangs from the basement ceiling. The photograph was hand colored with colored pencils.

Brian, I love the subject matter - and an old ball & socket tool post holder! Make chips fly! 'Hope you have a great time on the projects. Thx for posting.

Thanks for the kind comments.

Old machinery makes a great subject matter, it seems, due to its very geometric nature. Hand coloring with it allows the steel to be so wonderfully grey. I am considering buying the basic set of the Polychromos pencils. Crayolas can be OK sometimes (as seen here!) but others... Not so much, especially with getting colors on fine details. Anybody willing to share experiences? Are they as good as I am lead to believe? Do these work OK on RC paper?

While most of my cohort is busy playing Pok-e-mon and watching television I figure I ought to make something to be proud of. I feel they will look back and wish they did something other than goof off. I want to be sure that doesn't happen.

Have a good day,
Brian

Great photos of a great project wonderful old tools. Care to share the end goal of the casting and machine work?

@Larry the sailor I intend to make a running and usable motorcycle. In Iowa it turns out that you can make your own motorcycles if you have DOT rims and basic safety stuff. I will have something that looks and feels like an antique motorcycle without being the caretaker of a priceless artifact. I can go down gravel roads or through mud as they would have years ago but not feel guilty about damaging a historical piece. I would also know then that I can make everything for it. I will never have to worry about finding parts for a century old machine that only a few thousand were made. If all ends well I want to go for a long-ish ride on it. They have the Antique Motorcycle Cannonball that goes across the country, and if some can make it I am sure I can do a smaller loop.

I will also be making a three-speed transmission similar to the Albion common in Europe. This will be a sliding dog type. The clutch will be leather lined as old cars were. I am not sure what I will do for the gear change. It is partially drawn but the engine is coming first.

Thanks for the comment,

Brian

That sounds cool as hell. I hope to see more photo updates as you progress.
