Still stands watch over the entrance to the Columbia River long after its useful days are past. Pardon the lint. Scan of the print. The "stains" on the gun and turret are real .. either moss or rust spots
The composition slightly bothers me in that I do not know what is going on. It seems well attempted, but falls short of meaning (at least for me). Maybe my ignorance is showing, but I need a bit of contextual help here. And, just maybe a bit of detail in the right side would have helped with this dilemma. It is not a bad photo, just a bit too tame. - David Lyga
Thanks fellas. I admit this one was slightly off for me too but I couldn't quite place why. I posted it to stir some problem-solving ideas. I have a couple things to try next time I'm in the darkroom to strengthen the print.
You make a good point in your PM to me, Nodda Duma, that with the turret not being anything but boring, unchanging in tone, monotonous, what would there BE to show, given more exposure. That is a valid refutation of my comment but, still, I wanted something more to cling to; maybe something having nothing to do with that big gun. - David.
Allow me to tender the consideration that the print (specifically critique of the print) has led to a great conversation and exchange of ideas...and now has given greater meaning than the print itself would have provided. You could cling to the idea that the print became a vehicle for a much more fulfilling artist-art-viewer experience.
I'll bet you could find some old Sailors who would jump at the chance to scrape this baby down and put a proper feew coats of paint on this workhorse for you.... check it out. Its a shame to let this old warrior fall into disrepair like that... CWO4 WH Logan USN Ret.
