While printing I decided to do some experimentation. I put the kind of graseproof paper that you normally use in the kitchen oven on top of the print to make the shadows bleed out. I also made quite a lot of dodge and burn to create a moody feeling (?). Print was finally toned in Viradon.
This works, and the first positive that strikes me is the color imparted though toning. Even though a rather wintry scene (?) I find the lack of a standardized blue toning (a technical 'mistake') does not cause the picture to be subjectively misplaced or misconstrued. This is proof that 'rules' are made to be broken. The contrast determination is excellent as is the darkened upper sky. The red filter was wisely chosen.
To add to the impact I would have liked to have seen a bird or other form of wildlife, even a well-placed human could have been appropriate. - David Lyga
