Wisteria

What an amazing looking vine ! Does this regrow every spring to this size or does the plant survive winter and sprout leaves and flowerspikes ?

It's a hardy, deciduous, woody climber. It drops its leaves and the thin fleshy stems leaving a woody framework over winter that then re-sprouts. It flowers early before most of the leaves have grown. It's originally from China (Wisteria sinensis) and named in honour of the American physician Caspar Wistar but for some reason it is not called "Wistaria". It has a delightful scent that carries in the Spring air.

Beautiful flowers. I love wisteria, but it can really take over if given a chance. These would fit well in this months MSA, by the way.

Yes it needs brutal pruning and if left unpruned it not only takes over but can flower poorly as well.

Fantastic plant ! I have a similar jethro in my backyard. It is a Jade Vine from the Phillipines (Strongylodon macrobotrys ), and has the most unnatural colored flowers I have seen. I spent two years watering a seedling that wouldn't die or grow. Then it took over the house. Literally !

Thx for posting these, Svenedin. They're lovely, though I'm most drawn to this one. I admire your garden. Its just gotta be beautiful & a place of wonderful tranquility.
