'Not the point of focus I was aiming for, but 'very rushed, trying to capture while resting camera on rail before more young people came stomping up the ramp. This is immediately above the prior shot - you can see the panel labels in the lower left from the other.
That can be some tough shooting -- I was balancing the ol' 124g on a spindly bar trying to take a similar shot at 1/8 or such -- and still got a thin negative! (And a big diffuser equipped flash gun feels like cheating! ) I looked up 4449 -- maybe one reason for so many valves has to do with it being oil fired, although the coal fired stuff has plenty too.
I was doing exactly what you describe, DWT. 'A 1" dia. rail at the top of about a 15' rolling ladder that shook w/ any movement. I can't blame the ladder for everything, 'wish I'd gotten focus point about 8" closer. BTW, the shots of the Shay bevel gears & Shay Motive power are killer.
