Imagine all the times that has spun around.

Imagine all the grease they must have put on it over the years.
 
The stones are over 4ft diameter. My first thought was just how much torsion was in that shaft. You are right, they had to be using some copious amounts of grease to keep this puppy running. It operates for demonstration purposes on weekends still, i am told. The grist mill built in 1794 no doubt cranked out literally tons of flour, supporting major trade intersection.
