Croydon Minster (St. John the Baptist) Tower

Wow, impressive, and very nicely framed as well. The flag? Sir George Gilbert Scott again, but is the style of the building today as originally built?

The flag is a red cross on a white background. This would be the Cross of St George if it wasn't for the fact that there are the Diocesan Arms in the top left hand corner. So in this case it is the flag of the Church of England with the arms of the diocese of Southwark.

Yes the style is very similar indeed but it was enlarged when it was rebuilt. Originally Croydon was in the diocese of Canterbury (which is about 65 miles away) and the Archbishop of Canterbury had 2 palaces in Croydon. One is now a school next to the minster, the other is a few miles away.

Sir George Gilbert Scott was involved with the renovation of numerous churches and the architect of new ones as well. His son, George Gilbert Scott Jr and his grandson, Giles Gilbert Scott were also famous architects. His grandson Giles designed the iconic red British telephone box. His son George was architect of Dulwich College were I went to school.
