A little while back I was given the photographic kit of a friend's deceased husband. In amongst that gear was a Tetenal Sulphide toning kit. Never having toned a photograph before this afternoon I figured, 'How hard can it be?'. This is one of the ten prints I 'played' with! ;) The sepia is a lot lighter than I expected. I worked according to the instructions in the kit, mixing bleach and toner solutions at 1+4, and applying with cotton balls.
It's a funny thing about sepia - just adding some brown tones fools the eye into seeing reds, browns, and even greens. It works well with this sort of subject, emphasising the disuse and age.
I usually dilute the bleach and toner more than the recommended value to make the process more flexible, but you never quite know how it will turn out.
Thanks Gentlemen. I'm amazed at the difference the toning has made to this series of photographs. It is hard to explain, they feel more substantial now they're toned, if that makes any sense!
The abstraction to greys in a monochrome picture is a powerful tool, but sometimes it helps to stay closer to the original. 'Brick red' is a colour closely associated with... bricks. Even a hint of red or brown and the result is less abstract and more real. I nearly said 'concrete'!
Andy this is a really nice photograph, how large of a print did you make? Each of the sheets of glass with black in the background remind me of Brett Weston. The toning gives a depth to the image that works well even on a computer monitor I can see what it became. I would love to see close up pictures of the individual sheets of glass. What a treasure location for continued exploration.
Sorry for the very late reply Curt! I made a couple of 8x10 and a couple of 16x20s. The 16x20s look excellent (even if I say so myself). Unfortunately (from a photography viewpoint) the buildings are now undergoing renovation by a developer. Maybe I'll go back and make some 'now' photographs.
