A victim of economic bubble bursting in Japan in the early 90's. This pachinko parlour sat abandoned for a few years before I got around to photographing it.
While I like this a lot, I'd be very tempted to take down the highlight of the blown out lion head a little bit. I like the split lighting on the head but I think the blow out brings down the greatness and interest of the picture. To me it's too good a picture to let that stand.
Thanks blansky. I have printed it down in prints leading up to this but it doesn't work for me. I want the head to dominate and not compete with the clouds.
Good job capturing it! All too often we see these old buildings and think "gee I should shoot that" and then one day, they're gone. I captured our lone A&W root beer drive in just before it was demolished. Pure happenstance that I did, as it was bulldozed a week later.
Obviously a decrepit scene but the lion appears more vital in the IR than it probably ever did back in the day. Perfect marriage of material and subject . . .needless to say, I am green with HIE envy.
I totally agree, Wolfeye. Japan is no exception. I learnt the hard way many times, so I tried to always have my gear with me. I literally saw something one morning, only to see it gone in the afternoon. I found an abandoned neighbourhood in a bamboo forest, only to see it all bulldozed the following week, with my gear in hand.
Really, really cool, and a perfect subject for IR. Love the way it's framed too. Have you tried the Efke Aura 820? There may still be some kicking about.
Hi Tony. Thank you! Yes, I still have about 50 sheets of it in 8x10 left. I use it very sparingly. It's the only decent IR film out there, but still nothing like HIE! It's really too bad Kodak didn't keep this emulsion and do limited, annual runs of it. I'm sure there's no one there who could make it up, though, anymore.
