Very nice photograph HiHo - like other comments here the tones are exquisite. The composition I wonderful. The only possible option may be to check if there was a way to deconflict the front cable from the merge with the one in the rear. Doing so may have created other merges that are even less pleasing, always a compromise. It is great that you have this on 120 film - 4 times the film area and the square format is essential in this image in my opinion. Incidentally, if you have read any of Barry Thornton's work, he is convinced that the square format is much more sensible in practically any image. His Book "Edge of Darkness" is why I develop HP5 in Perceptol 1+2. As for square I am not so dogmatic though. I have been photographing a barn, that if I went square would have had too much sky and too much foreground to capture the entire barn, and a stone mansion in Md. built in 1804 that only just fits in landscape with a 159mm lens on the 8x10, and not at all with my standard 90mm on 4x5. If I had used the 28mm standard equivalent lens with 35mm film, I would have had no problem.
Michael, Thank You. I was a minor to moderate obstruction to all the foot traffic on the bridge that day - it was opening day for the new bridge. The intersection of lines was absent from my thought. I find myself so tunnel-visioned while composing, its easy to miss even obvious distractions and kind people let me know. 'Head-smack and 'of course' are frequent occurrances. I'm very much the student. I sort of puzzle & wonder about formats and even platforms (like bits & bites). I shoot film 'cause I love doing it. I haven't sold or tossed my digital - or any other tool in the quiver. I suspect we gravitate and become comfortable w/ a particular format, pc of gear. Because we like it, we use it more and get better with it. I didn't really select square, as much as the gear I had confidence in - was square. I have confidence in my well worn 35 & sometimes wonder what I can do w/ the extra width on the sides. And on the square frame - if only I had another inch in width or height. My default conclusion to the conflict is that the shooter (me) needs more imagination & skill (certainly true in my case). And more quality practice & immersion in reading & talking to my betters will get me there - or further along. I appreciate your kind help, Michael. 'Hope you & yours have a fabulous Christmas.
