Excellent! I think this would also work well without the sky...it tends to anchor this in reality while the image evokes abstraction. Either way, it's just fine!
Thanks Guys! Yep, I upped the filtration in the enlarger from 2.5 to 4 and it made a huge difference in this image. My wife also said I should try cropping out the distant mountains for a more abstract look... I'll probably try printing that way also to see which I prefer.
Beautiful photo with contrasts and textures throughout. As regards to removing the background I tried it out by moving the photo up in the screen and the main thing that I noticed was the loss of a sense of scale to the main sand dune.
Usually I like sky to "place" a photo in the real world, but here I like it more without the sky, to emphasize the great patterns in the dunes. Really nice!
I don't agree with the popular opinion. I think the sky or background is very important. I don't like the photo without it. Without the top part it reminds me a little of a well endowed person wearing a jock strap.
I came back and looked again today and my opinion changed. That distant hill on the left side of the horizon adds depth and distance and makes the top of this photograph look neat. I'll try not to come back again tomorrow and flip flop again
