This is a compelling image. A great moment you've captured here. They really seem to be whispering to one another. You ought to consider marketing this picture to publishers for a book cover. Bravo.
Really nice work! I love the composition. I am not sure if I like the color, but it's a matter of opinion.
Apparently, you didn't use a warming filter when shooting tungsten-balanced film in daylight. Hues are on the colder side. Still, the wool cap the girl is wearing is jumping out of the picture!
Did you try filtering out some more cyan when enlarging, so the tones are more neutral? Maybe you'd also need to get some magenta out too, but I'm afraid it would ruin the wool cap color.
Thanks all for your kind remarks! This image was taken at, or close to the blue hour. In terms of incident light color this whole scene was about as blue lit as it gets. I used no lens filter and exposed at EI 800, which means red channel got quite a bit underexposed, which results in somewhat blue shadow regions.
The brighter gray areas (e.g. the horse) in this print are perfectly neutral gray/white. The resulting negative required very strong change in print filtration compared to what I typically use for RA-4 enlargements.
Both contrast and saturation are rather weak. Obviously this doesn't work for every kind of subject matter, but it did give this pic some dreamy atmosphere I liked.
