The Bit Hit !!

Here's an 'Oldie' from my files found in an old album with 'press reproductions' as I won £25-00 in the 'Evening Standard' newspaper 'Amateur Cameraman' competition and £ 2-00 in 'Practical Photography' magazine -- it was taken in about 1959 in Barking, Essex ( England) at the annual Carnival Fairground on an AGFA ISOLETTE III with 75mm f3.5 SOLINAR lens that I had got in Germany for £10-00 ( a LOT of MONEY !) and given to my Aunt as a present then she couldn't understand all the 'technical things' such as Aperture and Shutter Speed so it went to a Cousin in the end -- many years later I was GIVEN that same model III by a lady Camera Club member and I USE it as I can work the 'technical things' no problems ! I used Kodak Tri-X film processed in ID11 and a Braun Hobby Automatic Flash that I had bought in Germany for £14-00 when I was in the Army and here in UK they were £39-00 with all the TAXES !

A great shot and very evocative of the 1950s and its youth. You can imagine Joe Brown and the Bruvvers at this very carnival

Cool photo! Braun Hobby flash -- the one with rechargeable water/acid batteries, and the rotatable/removable reflector on the flash head? I had one that I used in the mid-60's; very powerful, but somehow I was always a bit uneasy having to top up the batteries with distilled water. I took lots of high school photos with that flash, probably using Tri-X just like you. No auto flash anything -- that required some skill.

The look of focus and determination on this young mans face is fantastic, the young lady grimacing for impact and the fellow next to her looks very confident he can ring the bell. Not to mention you caught the mallet at just the right time. Wonderful capture!

Great photo! - I visited it now several times and agree with all the things written above. And it makes me think: What were the lives of all these different characters? A good thing if a photo evokes a lot of stories!

Thanks to all -- well that photo was the FIRST 20x16" print I ever did !! ( the paper was much CHEAPER then ! ) -- I scanned it from a 10x8" print in an album with the press cuttings about the reproductions in the Evening Standard and Practical Photography and YES -- the Braun Hobby flash WAS the one with wet-cell acid batteries that you had to top up with distilled water !! -- I still have several power packs the three flash heads 'saved from dumps' from other photographers and have cleaned them up and they work still but only plugged into the electric mains.
