The telegraph museum at Porthcurno, cornwall - a fascinating place. From here they ran telegraph cables to India in the 1800's! I learned that "relays" really were relays - to pump the signal on the end of each cable length. This kit is based in the original WW2 tunnels, and maintained by an old guy who once worked there. It was used in anger up to the 70s and the museum kit is mostly live, powered up and working!

yes!. as an aside I learned morse in the Merchant Navy and used to be able to do aldis lamp at 6 words/min. Cornwall has quite a history in early communication - Marconi sent the first transatlantic radio signal from just down the road at The Lizard - the hut still exists under the National Trust and has a working spark transmitter in it, tuned with leiden jars!
