Infrared self-portrait

Been wrestling with Rollei 400 IR for a while and I think I've found a EI and development scheme that gives me proper shadow detail without too much blown/harsh highlights.

This was taken in a low-angle autumn evening, self portrait using the infamous Autoknips III ^^

Basically, I exposed the film more and pulled the development 1 stop from what I usually would do. Negs look normal, no problem getting details in either shadows or highlights from scans, have yet to mess around with it in the dark :)

Shot at EI 6. Normally I would shoot it at EI 12 and develop for 9 minutes in HC-110 B (1 min init inv, then 2 inv per min) This time I shot it at EI 6 and developed for 6 minutes, same ag.scheme as above. 6 minutes is approx 9min - 20% -20'ish%, so, in my head, it is ISO 6 with an N-1 development, to preserve highlights. (excact calculated time is 5.7 minutes, but I rounded up to 6) EI 12 works as well (in my experience) in certain light, but with very hard light, EI 12 and 9 minutes, will imo create too strong contrast on the negative, so you will loose both shadows and highlights very fast. The only way to mend that, would be to expose more (to get in the shadows) and develop less, to pull down the highlights, from testing, it wasn't a huge difference, but the negatives sure look better, the sky will be black, the shadows does have some detail and from checking trough a loupe on this shot, I see that my face does have detail in the highlights. The white side of the balls (we call them tractor-eggs) should be white-white, and they are very close to being/are slightly blocked, that from inspecting the negative and messing around with the scanner a bit. Fun fact; My jacket and cap is actually black and my trousers were sort of dark marine-blue ^^

Beyond the technical details, I just really like this photograph.

The unexpected IR tonalities (something akin to the disharmony of eating a blue steak covered with green sauce?) are well balanced and striking. The leaning pose is, intentional or not, perfect. And the round bail forms surrealistic. Splitting the frame with that tonally well-defined but non-horizontal horizon also really grabs my attention.

My only compositional quibble might be that merged distant tree over your right shoulder. But there's no way you could have known that detail without a second person peering through the viewfinder and hollering "One step to the right!" or something similar.

This one is really fun to look at.

Thanks for the positive words. =) Yeah, the three behind me is a little *bleh* ^^ I was running like crazy, the Autoknips sounds like it's about to set of a bomb once it starts spinning, I only knew that I had to be about on-line with the tractor-egg to be in the focus plane, haha! The rest of the composition was pretty intentional, as the "valley" with these strange things kind of forms a wavy "S"-like line. I think I am leaning forward because I was thinking "hmm.....did it go off yet....did it? Did....can I move?" =D But it kind of looks a little weird too, fits the rest of the scene kinda

Yes, I just love the tonality here, and together with your stance the whole picture has a sort of Fifties Sci-Fi look to it.

Very good! I love the clouds, the bales, the trees, and you in the photo makes it somewhat surreal. Just all-around great. I haven't had a chance to try the Rollei IR, although I have a bunch in the freezer. Thanks for your findings. I'll try more exposure and then adjust developing.

Looks like you are on another planet; gret job in creating this strange athmosphere
