This was on the city subway. They were a young couple, going home at the end of an evening out (probably 10pm-ish). It just happened that they looked divided by the pole and utterly bored/disinterested.
Yeah- I wouldn't dare attempt most of the street photos I take were it not for the Rollei with the waist-level finder. People are pretty oblivious to it. Strangely enough though, that camera elicits more positive and affectionate responses than any other camera. Large format stuff just invokes awe and respect, SLRs of any flavor at best get "is that a Hasselblad?" and at worst have attempts made to draw them into a penis-size contest. But the Rollei just brings back warm memories for people.
I've noticed the same with my lowly Yashica Mat-124G. My Nikon F2 draws indifference most of the time. My Calumet C1 8x10 just plain scares people. No other way to put it. But the TLR draws people right over, often with the request, "Can I look?" followed by amazement and the comment that the GG is "much better" than their LCD screens.
Any camera that's not glued to one's face is good for street work, I think. Except cameras that are bigger than the subjects...

Oddly enough 35mm rangefinders seem to work fairly well for street work too. I don't know why people tend to be oblivious to their use, even though you have the thing right in front of your eye. That said, I still wouldn't have tried this photo with my Contax G2.
