This area has become my girlfriend and my favorite place to wind down with coffee after a hike. I've always admired the silvery pool that forms here late in the day, just above the waterfall.
Tough scan, I printed the highlights in the pool just off paper white with only hints of detail. I tried printing with more burning in but it seemed to loose the glowing feeling which attracted me to the scene in the first place.
Lovely sheen, looks like a nice place to be. Sky reflecting off water is always a problem, probably because of the high blue content. I have tried various filters but the burning and dodging seems the only solution.
Thanks, Tony! It was the actual sun reflecting that created the brightest highlight area. I'm very happy with the print but not so much the scan... But then again that's usually the case.
I think you nailed the highlights in the print very well, Shawn. It does glow, and I'd like to be there with a cup of coffee too. Exactly the kind of place I resonate with.
Thanks, Thomas! The printer in me has a hard time letting go of details in the highlights but sometimes that's exactly what a print needs... (of course I almost always burn down to at least a shade off of paper white... can't help it! =)
Thanks, Michael. When I started out printing I used white and black too often, intentionally and unintentionally. As my printing skills matured that changed, until I felt like I'd abandoned them as tools. I'm trying to get back to using the tonal extremes, when it's the right aesthetic choice. As you say, "No rules."
