Documenting my friends fathers funeral. I wasn't sure about intruding with a camera, but later my friend said he was going to ask me to bring it but thought it would be presumptive. His father was a Marine and so I expected the usual fat old guys from the VFW to be there. I didn't know he was a retired full colonel and would be receiving full military honors.

It was an f-22 day and the yellow filter was quite unnecessary, rendering the light blue trousers very close to the navy blue tunics. Contrast lowered and slightly lightened for posting. I have eliminated any family, etc.

The family reaction has been gratifying, but I really am unable to judge my own work. Your criticism is desired.

Nicely done series. I like the choice of Black and White as it gives more of a sense of timelessness to the images. Funerals can be difficult be cause of the raw emotions but I think that you kept a focus on a single aspect (the military Honors) and your photos tell a portion of the story.

Yes, the emotions are raw, and remembering what a wreck I was at my own father's funeral, I thought color would just get in the way. There are a few more shots that include family members but wouldn't be proper to post. The widow's look of utter desolation as she receives the flag is difficult for me to even look at. My friend was pretty numb through the whole thing and presenting it as a documentary of a military funeral, instead of his father's funeral, let him see things that he doesn't even remember happening.
 
A year later, this series still makes me, the photographer, cry.
