Barcalounger

Glancing out the window as my wife drove us home from the park the other day I saw the barcalounger abandoned behind an abandoned retail store. It was knocked over, despite the warning to “DONT PUSH!”, a mere few feet away (see far 9 o’clock in scan). The path where the barcalounger ‘bled out’ caught my eye, the hawk(s) circled above, we pulled over, I crawled out the passenger window, and stood upon the roof of the family SUV as I took a few rolls with my pocket camera. What was most fun about the shoot was to lean down, knock on the roof of the car and send messages to the kids when I needed to pause and reload and such. The next day I came back with my full MF rig and the energy from the scene was gone. The neighborhood kids had their way with the barcalounger over the prior 24 hours, it was no longer on its side but flipped over and stomped to bits (probably used as some kind of skateboard ramp or leaping pad?). I came back a couple more times that week to continue shooting and it only became worse. So this shot you see from my original “scouting expedition” was what worked as best I wanted to communicate, my appreciation for this shot is more because it has all the angles and the elusive hawk(s) circle above with our protagonist in its last throws of service.

The chair has its own cultural statement to make, but what I find most poignant in this image is the tree/shrub gowing up through the crack between the wall and the pavement. Notable for a successful (thus far) struggle, it is a symbol of life triumphing over the man-made.But i'd also like to say a word in support of the Olympus XA - half the pictures of our kids growing up were taken with this reliable, durable, super-sharp little machine. Nice work! Beautiful ugliness...

"Beautiful Ugliness"! Great term JCJackson. Having been around business and industrial sites for many years, I too have always liked the barren landscape they provide. This is a great example. Also, the XA is, IMO, a very underrated camera. I have my Dad's, which he carried for years. Wonderful pocket camera!

Thanks much for the kind words all! Beautiful ugliness, splendid term!
