Vosges - revisited

Vosges - revisited

Sometime ago (in August) I posted an image asking for comment. I am grateful for those received, particularly the constructive suggestions from Thomas Bertilsson and Jordanstarr. While I attempted to work out their suggestions I eventually settled on my own approach, being:

1. Determining the foreground and cloud effects I wanted and envisioned at the time of exposure
2. The difference determined above was that the clouds needed 2 1/3 stop more exposure while roadway was held back by ¼ stop
3. I took a leaf from the book “Way Beyond Monochrome by Ralph W Lambrecht and Chris Woodhouse” and cut a mask for the foreground to assist in holding it back during the exposure of the sky.
4. The resulting sliver of white (unexposed) at the edge of the hills was touched in after washing and drying.

This has been a very instructive process and am looking at some of my other negatives in a new light!

You have managed to produce a completely different feeling in the reworked print - congratulations

This one has much more grandeur

Well done

Much better! The clouds literally roll over the horizon. Better contrast, better tones, and dodging and burning techniqes. I think with some selective bleaching you could really make some parts of the image really "pop". I'm undecided which crop I like better, but this is definitely the better print. The only thing I would tweak is those intense highlights in the foreground of the road -they're a little hot, but it could be in the scan. It looks like over-bleaching, but you never mentioned anything about it in your description. These are just opinions, however. I'm glad to see you're thinking more critically about the print. If there was an APUG "most improved print" award, I'd give you a gold star.

Thank you all for the positive comments, I am happy with the progress and potential. And thank you Jordanstarr for the star ;-) , yes I did not mention bleaching the road and overlooked that in my description posted and found the comment regarding the crop valuable too. Back to the darkroom!
