Tired of asking others. A self portrait

So first - I don't like this lens. BUT, I wanted to get this dress in the shot as much as possible, so I had to use my wide angle. It's not that sharp and I much prefer a longer length, but hey, just trying things out here. I have been asking some friends to sit for me - and while they all say yes, I am really bad about making arrangements (what with the three kids and all...) So I said, what the heck, dusted off the studio equipment, shook out the canvas drop, and went to shooting. Although I don't really LIKE any of the shots; I did get a great idea of a sort of project to do involving self portraits in the studio. :) SO - more to come. And hopefully better than the few I will post here.

Another thing - go easy on the comments , kay? I'm almost 40 with 3 kids!!!

A good sight better than any of my efforts, mine wouldn't stand up to scrutiny at all. I might have given it a square crop, but that's about it. The facial expression and positioning of the hands give an impression of uncertainty, anxiety even - but that works too. Depends if that is what you want to convey.

Power to you Katie! If you are like me, the kids run a mile when the lights and backdrops come out.

I can't really add much more then what has been said, except that I actually like the pose, expression and the format. I know, such a wide format is not normal for portraits, but I don't mind how you have executed this.

Do you mind me asking how far away the camera was from you?

Camera on tripod was probably about 8ft or so away, with giant softbox about three feet front and to the right of me. Kicker in the rear didn't fire for some reason, but I meant to have a rim light/hair and dress light from the back. I like dimentional lighting and don't usually like just flat portrait light. While this was certainly experimental, I have actually done lots of studio work before (as amaturish as this may appear HAHAH!).

I guess I always look worried - but I just didn't want to smile. I thought is would not look natural. After all, does anyone just sit around smiling when they are alone? My MOther might ... but she is the happiest person in the world. I'm not that lucky. Anxiety rules my life now that I am an "adult" sadly.

You look fine. I'd love to do my 40's over again, and you haven't even started! The upswept hair and the slight downward turn of the mouth does make you look a little severe, but that's not a criticism. One of my favourite portraits is Karsh's portrait of Sir Winston (but you don't look that severe!).
