MG Art 300 - Detroit

This is an image previously uploaded and made on the new Ilford MG Art paper. Wonderful stuff on first impression, but has a strange, non-fiber feel to it. Almost as if it were a resin/fiber hybrid of some sort. It also has a slight gloss or sheen to it. Definitely a nice paper and great to have something new for the analog printers, but not sure I'll use it over the long run. I can see where certain, pictorialist style of work will look great on it, but the texture and somewhat gloss shine might be distracting in some work.

Thanks, Vincent. he only thing I did special to scan was to open up the histogram to allow as much shadow detail as possible. It tends to make the texture more pronounced, but opens up the low end.
 
the texture really gives a beautiful feel to this image bill.
i can see why this paper is good for some things, and not everything.

have you tried to wax your prints to remove the sheen ?
or put a layer of unsalted collodion on the print :smile:
i used to coat things with flexible collodion ( has camphor in it, and i could buy it at the pharm )
after a while it gets cloudy .. but unfortunately it also turns ... the print into a flammable crazy mess :smile:

I don't have as much experience with ferrotypes, other papers, etc. as you do, but I do like this paper.

Like most, I agree it's really well suited for certain types of subjects but not for everything. That's fine...it's fun and easy to work with in the darkroom (didn't even mind how much it floats) and the images it works well with, it works very well with.

You're right, Colin! It does float.... Another reason it seems to be a resin hybrid of some sort... or a plastic coating. I do like it and will continue using it where it will work.
