Double Selfportrait

On the 9th of November, 1998, an intruder murdered my 85 year old mother. Prior to that time I had stopped photographing for a while and was concentrating on drawing and painting. A few weeks prior to this sad event I had done a few drawings of myself holding a pad with a blank page, perhaps depicting the challenge of the empty page. A few months later, in early 1999, I received an old photo in the mail that a friend had in his collection. It was a picture that my farther had taken of my mother and I when I was about 2 or 3 years old. I created a drawing of myself in charcoal, and copied the picture on 4 x 5 film and using Liquid Light emulsion I put the photo on the same sheet of paper that I did the drawing on, so that it appeared as if I was holding the photo. I've never shown this before.

Even without the back story, it is a very powerful photo. This is true art.

WoW, what a moving story. It is hard to continue with things like this because it brings up so many emotions, good and bad. I look at this and it reminds me of my mom too. She didn't have the hard ending your mother did but she had so many things over her life and the portrait I did on her 94th birthday was the last photography I was ever able to do and it is very hard to even bring out of my collection. Be strong and thank you for sharing this with us. remember we are your family too.
