Part of an ongoing project documenting sites of the Highland Clearances in Scotland. These are some of the ruins of Arichonan township.
Many townships were forcibly cleared and thousands emigrated. Many of these clearances were brutal, and helped cause a pattern of land ownership that eventually led to vast sporting estates in the highlands, a wild landscape often devoid of people.
This village was cleared in 1848, but the forced eviction was resisted, causing it to be quite well documented and studied by historians. See:
