Bixby Bridge Bench

Bixby Bridge Bench

Flatbed scan of 8 x 10 Toned Silver print.

Look familiar? While reading through a B+W (U.S.) mag, I instantly recognized David Ashcraft's print "The Bench" advert as being the bench in the span of Bixby Bridge on Hwy 1 in Big Sur not far from where I live. So.. okay, I had to make my own version, but not claim it as my own! This image is made from 2 negs, I switched skys in the wet darkroom by dodging the sky while enlarging the bench and roadway, then burned in a more interesting sky from another negative set up in a 2nd carrier.. How guilty am I? Is this stealing? By the way, I met David at his gallery near Yosemite and showed him the print, he liked it but wasn't interested in buying one, such is life.

That's alright Victor, I like your version. And FWIW, I have never heard of David Ashcraft nor seen his version. Your probably is much better.

Fantastic!

Ever seen those two pictures of the Snake River, one by Ansel Adams and one by Minor White? The very fact of photographing a subject makes it your own, because no one else will do it quite like you do. Like the sky, but I think the burn line is a little too apparent. That's a small quibble; otherwise a very good shot. Dean
