From Photostock 2011. Jim is the "Sage of Photostock", possessing of uncanny navigational skills. As you can see from all the wonderful portraits of him, he's quite a sympathetic subject too.

Nice portrait of Jim dlin. Yes, he will bend a ear and always has good conversations. Met him this last winter in Joshua Tree.
What lens did you use?, a good focus job on the eyes and face with the rest falling in different degrees of softness.Nice lighting also.

This and the others are superb portraits. Makes me want to know more about that Imagon lens. I see the print was toned in thiocarbamide. I thought that would produce more of sepia, no? Or is it a gold formula? Great work.

Thanks, everyone.

Mike, I used a 200mm Imagon lens without the diffusion disk on a 4x5 camera. The lens is a simple doublet design and I can use the shutter's iris to adjust the degree of "softness". Wide open, as in these portraits, it's very soft with lots spherical aberration.

Regarding thiocarbamide toning, I tend to like a subtle warming of the highlights without too drastic a color shift in the midtones/shadows. I use a mild bleach solution to bleach the print back briefly before washing and redeveloping in thiocarbamide. This gives a subtle golden brown hint to the highlights that I prefer.

All the best,
Daniel
