During the last full moon, these seemed to glow as I passed the garden at night, so the next day I set up my camera and made all the adjustments and focus and waited for the night. Under an overcast sky with just the moon for light, I made the exposure.
It is amazing just how similar the quality of the light in this picture is, when compared to the earlier image of Grandma's Lilies and Friend, taken more than a decade earlier. In the print however, the moonlit image seems to possess a more ethereal glow and the black of the shadows looks almost like velvet. Perhaps the paper is the biggest difference but in comparing the prints side by side they are very different in tone and value and I think a lot of the difference is attributable to the lighting after all.

Thank you for the kind words gentlemen. Yes the night was completely breathless unlike the afternoon with its continuing breezes. I've photographed these lilies many times over the years because they are so special to me, having been in my grandmothers garden since the late 1940's.
