Ampol House, Melbourne

This striking building, formerly the Elizabeth Towers Hotel, and before that Ampol House, is currently slated for demolition - so I had to make a photo!

I read about the possible demolition in the Age and have exactly the same thoughts as you of taking a picture or two of it.

I only have a 90mm as my widest, looks like I'll have to stand a bit further back.

Late afternoon in Winter is best for the stairs, I photographed them about 30 years ago and the northern light from the sun then, was certainly better than the summer direction.

I used to get petrol in the garage on the ground floor, somewhere I have a picture of that as well.

Nice piccie; note to self, must pick up a cheap 65mm. I wish!

Mick.

Thanks Mick! - this picture is cropped in half - with the 65mm I had a ludicrous amount of foreground (almost from camera position, even with as much front rise as I could squeeze from the bellows to try and get the top of the masts in without tilt). So, I actually shot this as a portrait frame, and cropped moreorless to the top half. You might be able to fit it in with 90mm if you can get more front rise... I didn't have my 90mm with me to test this

Trouble with the winter light is... the building may well be gone by then :-(

Marc!

Marc, I will have a go with my 90mm maybe next Sunday early afternoon, sun should be shining according to BOM.

Love the picture, Austin A30, we had one of those until we upgraded to an Austin A50 to tow the trailer. The Holden looks like a two coloured taxi, could be wrong though.

Where were you set-up?

Mick.

Early afternoon is definitely the go Mick - mine was a bit after 1pm... you can tell from the shadows.

My dad had a little Austin A somethingorrather, but that was before I was born I think  (He had an Austin Freeway by the time I was around)

I set up between the traffic lights on the median strip between the service lane, and the main part of Royal Parade - fairly clear/close view from there - any further back and you might get some tree obstructions...

Marc!
