Behind The Scenes

Shot on Fuji Pro 400H on an RB67 ProS with a Toshiba A25L flash I picked up for $1 at a 2nd hand op shop (my main units died on me), so its M/full power only.

Hand processed in flexicolor. Standard processing this time, no rodinal rehal hijinks.

I should mention how much I dislike 400H for its difficulty in loading on plastic reels (see the bend mark) and its fold-in-half style curling it develops while dry.. have to dry twice after inverting on reel second time to get flatter negs.

Okay the only light in this shot is coming from the flash, I didn't set appropriate contrast (exposure was correct for the model) as I decided to keep the flash hot spot on the wall in as there is detail there (very dense though), I like how it looks, and as a behind the scenes shot it demonstrates how much information a neg can store, incredible dynamic range. Even with a flash at that proxmitiy reflecting off white reflective tiles.

Working with a single flash that only had M (full power) was very challenging after my main units died, a lot of careful placement of both subject and light reflecting at the right spots.. had to shoot like this for about 2 weeks everyday with this model.

I can tell you I was wishing I had $ for more gear at the time, and thanking my lucky stars I had brought my d* camera to check the lighting.

I suppose the purpose of the photo is to show - here is a test shot that is of some technical interest. It certainly does illustrate what the colour neg is capable of. I like the edge lights on her body & the contrast between the edges & the darker tones in the centre of her body.

In my opinion, every picture should have a purpose: the idea or emotion that the photographer was trying to express. You have an attractive model here, and who doesn't appreciate a shapely female form. But for me anyway, too many other things distract from her, if she is the purpose of the picture: the tripod and flash, the wavy line in the top left, the out of focus blob bottom left, and although I like how she is holding her hand on the shower door the line of the door bisecting her face is distracting to me.

Or maybe as others have posted, you are simply demonstrating technique and I have missed that point.

I totally support your opinion of Pro400H (and fuji color negs in medium format in general); for me the best reason btw. Kodak Portra / Fuji is that Kodak handles better. Both are as far as emulsions go pretty damn good..

Pictures dont need a defined pinpoint conscious purpose. Majority of the shots were digital, this was a behind the scenes shot. This IS in context, the context is that its a behind the scenes. Shows the technical ability of colour neg sure, but also the creative choice of working in the ridiculous limitations of a $1 flash after my main gear broke, and how I came to a solution with lighting on it, this is just one out of several indoor and outdoor scenarios.

It's an aesthetic on it's own.

This is in the standard gallery, after all.
