Cousins

These are my kids together with my sister's kids, and this print is gift for my sister this season. I made this portrait about three years ago, but never printed it... I sent her a high res scan, and she used one on a x-mas card.

Anyway... three years later (last summer), as a few of you may know, her older son, Jamie, was killed in a hit and run incident... he's the boy on the left. We were all devastated.

This picture... and a few others from this moment became very important to me, and I've finally printed them up properly to give to my sister and her family for Christmas. Sometimes, I neglect those pictures that I consider just the family snaps for the pictures that are, well... artier.

But more than anything, I wish I had made a few more pictures of Jamie on that trip.

Wow, I bet is was tough printing that! Great job. Thanks for sharing. BTW I think we were on a print exchange together years ago.

Oh my, I remember when this happened, Suzanne. Still tugs at my heart strings thinking about it. What a valuable photograph this turned out to be.

I'm just shaking my head over and over. Such a sad sad thing. Preserving these moments is such an important job, one I started taking alot more seriously when people in my negatives started leaving us. It's a beautiful shot.

How sad. I'm glad you are able to give this beautiful print to your sister.

Thanks, everyone... it's a little sad heading into our first Christmas without him there, but I hope this picture can bring a measure of comfort to my sister's family. (Scan looks a tad more red than the print.) It's interesting that when pictures get older, they can take on meanings that may never have been anticipated when they were made, no? I'm glad I'm able to give her this print. And I'm keeping one for myself!! Oh, and Mike... yes, I think that's right, we traded prints some time ago!! Good to "see" you again.

I'm glad for you, and for all your family, you took the shot. You're right - these become more precious as time goes on. I'm so sorry for the loss!

Man this is heart wrencing Suzanne. A friend of mine once said "photographs are the dead leaves of life".....the purest memory of a life lived. Leaves grow again, but never the same. I wish you and your family as happy a Christmas as you can have, even if it can never be the same. :-( Kal

what can I say  . . .
. . . be happy you have a great 'image' to share your sadness with us. Words are so shallow sometimes.
