Thanks folks! I tried to set the mood of the day with this image......dark... cold...dreary.

These steps are somewhat un-telling. Obviously old and not too close to the city.
They are made of limestone, the natural rock of choice around here at that time and still to this day.

Peter, I think the river was to shallow at this point north of the city for riverboats however that is very possible.
