Playing in the river

After a long break due to college classes, I'm back in the darkroom. I'm still printing the series shot in the summer of 2004 in the Sertão region of Brazil...

This photograph was taken in the city of Xique-Xique, in the banks of the São Francisco river. A lot of the kids were playing, some competing for my attention. This group was too involved in their own affairs to mind me, but they did let me photograph them. I can't remember what they were doing exactly, but if I think they were fishing (or pretending to)...

All comments, good or bad, are welcome.

It's been a long time since I've posted (or even printed, for that matter), and it feels good to be back.

Welcome back, Andre... it's great to see you posting again. This is a great image, and you've managed to retain good detail in the shadows, in what I'm sure was pretty harsh light. I love the body language of each child. My only criticism would be to burn down a bit more in the upper left corner. Great to see your work again!

Thanks Suzanne,

I agree that both upper corners could use quite a bit of burning, and I think I'll do that next printing session. I'm going to take the easy way out and say that my printing skills are a bit rusty  .

I really like this one. The eyes on the kid in the center grab me. Then I see the kid with the binky and the very concerned look. A lot going on in this one.

Is that a bus in the backgound crossing the river?

Matt

Thanks Matt,

That bus/car on the background was actually being washed at the time. As uneasy as that might make you feel about kids playing in the same water, its not as bad as when I asked the fishermen nearby if they were catching anything good. "No, just little piranhas". Maybe there's no relation to the big, flesh eating piranhas (which that river has), but made me uneasy all the same.

Andre, like this shot. Particularly like the little guy on the right, mature look of concentration and a binky too.

Welcome home. tim

The bus in the background reminded me of a trip to Nepal I once took. The bus had to cross a few rivers. At first I was nervous, but after the first one I figured, "They do this all the time". While crossing the 4th or 5th river I noticed another bus that had been washed down the river (obviously months previously) smashed on some rocks. Nervousness returned!
