I find it a bit busy on my monitor - lots of detail with lots of similar local contrast making it a bit confused. The print is probably very different though.
Thanks Claire and Leon for your comments. This is admittedly a busy scene. I attempted to provide a strong diagonal graphic element around the tree and sunlit background for the eye to latch on to (doing the squint test to remove high frequency detail). From there one can explore the wealth of micro-details. The print of course holds a lot more information, especially in the highlight areas, which I can't manage to translate in the scan.
Dan - It looks pretty good to me... of course I had the good fortune to be there when you made the exposure! Now that everyone else gets to see a New England forest, you can understand the "Roots & Rocks" style. There is so much underbrush that most photos take on a Jackson Pollock background. I think Dan did a good job with the large rocks and angled tree.
Got a couple of prints to tone tonight Dan and will send them off to you! - gene
Busy or not, I like it. I think that the diagonal is effective, but burning the lower left & upper right 1/4 of a stop might help clear up the composition a bit more (and hopefully still keep the many levels of detail). That's just my 2c, however, and keeping it as it is would be a great decision as well.
