This is interesting. The progress from muted color - almost mono in the lower archways, complete w/ lots of texture, detail - gives way to a more contrasty level in the subject (bars, opposite side showing through arches), but less texture or tone in the front face. Then higher, texture & detail are back (in spades), capped off by a zorching sky. I don't know if this was in your mind's eye when you lined it up, but it comes through. I likely would have been oblivious to the progression, but would have thought it looked good. 'Nice job.
Well, the arches at the bottom are closed off with (I think) painted plywood partitions. They're doing a lot of restoration work on the Colosseum and that's related to it. While the color gradation from medium to deep blue in the sky was not something I planned, the overall transition from solid to open was definitely part of my compositional plan. And believe it or not, that's just from Kodak Ektar, no polarizer or other color filter used.
