This is my first attempt at hand coloring.
I spotted this scene during a cloudy day in a nearby town. Grey painted chairs, grey stone table, under an apple tree. Besides the fact that I only had B&W, it seemed a good candidate for trying out coloring.
However, I'm concerned that this "spot of color in a sea of B&W" is too cliché. I'm thinking of the stuff you see in the shopping mall poster stores done like this.
Opinions?
Thanks.
I like the composition, the idea is well executed. Unfortunately, a lot of viewers of the print will assume that it's a Photoshop trick, as it has been done a lot in the digi world.
A cliche? Do real men eat cliche? No matter what it made me think.
It caught my eye. I can't tell it's an apple.
I don't know about processing and papers, but I feel like a few more blacks and a few more whites would please me. But then again, "Color in a cloudy day" doesn't normally imply contrast. Maybe I if it were mine to do, and I were to increase the dynamic range, I would be forced to change the title.
I guess this is a contemporary kind of thing. On a sun bright day, there's glare and lot's of contrast, colors are washed out and fine detail is not what I see. But there are many striking photos of sun bright days fully saturated and "sharp as a tack".
Guess it's in the eye of the beholder, or the emotion of the photographer.
Actually, I sought of took in the overall image - decided that I liked it, and didn't really register on the apple until I went back after reading the previous comments. The image works very well with it, and might work pretty well without it. IMHO!
I feel that the B&W print is rather lack luster and should be printed on a harder grade of paper. As such the print lacks impact except for the coloured apple which is as you fear cliched. IMHO part toning or hand colouring should be left to the digital crowd, and we should work on producing the fine art print.
