While shooting this abandoned boat in Iceland, the storm clouds over the mountains began to clear, making the background far more interesting than the original subject. Thoughts appreciated
Both the water, clearing skies and mountain backdrop all add to the foreground subject the boat. They go together.
Was there a reason why you chose not to show the whole boat? It's just that the complete boat, taken further back and ideally from a higher position so it's revealed in the vastness of the scene might have been better.
At the very least it then begs the question of why it is now so far from the water. If it's to be left, why go to that trouble? Pictures with questions always stick in my mind.
I have a weakness for abandoned boats in lonely settings so I may not be the most objective reviewer
Pentax: thanks for the comments. It seems that every time I try to include an entire object in a photograph, I'm disappointed in the results. So I tend to concentrate on parts or details. I do agree with your thought that the entire boat, photographed from a distance where it becomes a much smaller part of the composition, may have worked better in this case. I guess I'll have to go back to Iceland and shoot it again!!!
Dan, having been not far away on this one I can say you did a great job using the funky weather to benefit. Love the way youve printed the darker cloud in the top of the frame. Also like the crop tighter like this. Makes for a good, strong, tight composition. Maybe a drop of a half stop in the lower left corner would tighten it more? Nice the way it is though.
