Catholic Cathedral - Norwich

Catholic Cathedral - Norwich

This is the first 8x10 silver print made from my recent venture into the Catholic Cathedral in Norwich, UK. Its an selective (cropped) enlargement from a 5x4 negative.
This is a homage to a Bruce Barnbaum print I saw last year on Les Mcleans lounge wall which obviously made an impression.(Steps at Wells Cathedral)
This is the first work print and I will need to 'flash' the windows as there is plenty of detail in there. The image is high key intentionally.

Any comments are welcome

I already love it. How did you handle development or can you control the contrast while printing?

Thanks for the comments.

Believe it or not , its a straight print. No dodge or burn applied yet. The neg was exposed and developed for Alt printing so is quite dense and long scale

Phil -

Very nice!

I like the high-key treatment. Images like this are all about light; the usual approach with murky shadows conveys something about the space, but not the feeling associated with the light bouncing around.

Something does need to be done with the windows. Burning in may not lead to the right result - that would be a difficult burn if you want to avoid unnecessarily darkening the area around the windows. Flashing the print may help put some texture into the windows without causing the edges to go darker than you want.

Burning may be appropriate on the edges. The upper corners in particular are a bit bright, and bringing them down just a bit may help contain the image within the frame.

Be sure to check the orientation of the image - it seems to me that it is tilted about half a degree to the left, but that may be an illusion caused by what appears to be curvature in the horizontal beam.

The choice of high key is, frankly, inspired. The image looks almost etched in to the screen. Taking the time to exactly centre the camera really works too.

If I must nit-pick (and I must, it's The Law... ) it would have been nice if you could have kept the back vertical to avoid the slight keystoning of the windows, but it's not a biggie at all - and I'm guessing you were at the limit already.

Beautiful already, this will make a gorgeous final print.

Cheers, Bob.

What a beautiful structure, and you've captured the luminous quality very well. The slight tilt to the cross bar is a bit distracting, but it seems unavoidable.

All the best,
Daniel

Another beautiful image from your chapel work! I think that you have captured the light quality and atmosphere of this place. I really like it.
