Castle Hackett

Built in the 13th, abandoned in 1705.
The ancient castle of the Kirwans lies beneath Knockma Hill, believed to be the legendary Other world seat of Finvarra, ruler of the fairies of Connaught.

This castle was photographed by Simon Marsden in the 1970/80's. This castle was in his book "The once great houses of Ireland"; Page 55. His photograph has two trees in front of it that seems to be gone now. Was nice visiting a castle that Marsden had photographed. Was nice also trying to take my own shot...

Few very small scratches on the neg unfortunately.

this is quite nice - the IR effect of the vines on the darker castle walls is very powerful.

Beautiful photograph!

This looks very good. I might try some Efke Aura IR820 film now that Kodak HIE has been discontinued, particularly if it is available in 120 size rolls. Simon Marsden happens to be one of my favourite photographers.

I recall the Simon Marsden photo. It's a while since I last saw it but if my memory has recalled it as it was then this one matches his in every way

Well executed

A terrific IR shot Martin, you have mastered this film, it's a pity it has such a low ISO.

Cheers

Thanks all for the nice comments.

Keith, The Efke Aura 120 film is very nice, different from HIE but still very nice. Its only problem is its speed, but you get used to it

Vincent, Dont know about mastered but getting on a bit better with it than when I first started using it. It is a really nice film but the ISO is a problem if there is any wind about...

Martin, I was wondering regarding the low ISO, do you meter with the filter in place or use a seperate meter and then apply the filter factor to obtain your exposure?

cheers
Vincent

Vincent,

I use a hand held meter

I set the meter to ISO 6
If I can i take an incident meter reading, failing that I take a normal reflective reading

What ever reading I get on the meter and I am happy with I transfer it to the camera, I don't add any stops etc the ISO 6 on the meter takes care of this

I then take two shots one at the ISO 6 reading and another shot 1 stop more over exposed
One of the two shots will generally work out, not always though. In tricky lighting you need to bracket more

Your choice of developer and dilution is very important with this film i think...

All the best
M
