My favorite lens/camera/film combo; Blad, 150mm Sonnar and T-Max 100. Lit with two strobes in softboxes, using a 3:1 lighting ratio. Carla's complexion was a little bit rough so I placed a Cokin soft focus filter under the enlarging lens when I printed it. I prefer to use a soft focus filter after the fact, as if I don't like the result, all I have done is wasted a piece of paper rather than irrevocably ruining the negative. This smoothed her complexion and gave a kind of "dreamy" effect to it. Much more flattering to this very beautiful woman than the RUTHLESSLY sharp image produced by the Sonnar!

Her complexion looks fine here. I agree that getting the sharpest negative is usually the best way to go. You can always reduce sharpness in enlarging. I know that the effects aren't always the same. If need be, take two photos, one as sharp as possible and one softer.
