Carbon Print Workshop No. 1

took vaughn hutchin's carbon printing workshop at newport, oregon, over the last weekend and managed to pull out a couple of decent prints .....
Location
Clear Lake, Oregon Cascades
Equipment Used
5x7 deardorff w/240 nikor
Paper & Developer
carbon print, using 1% ammonium dichromate
How did the print dry down for you? I did not get a chance to see it before you left.

Vaughn

vaughn -- the pier dried down well, but not as much detail in that highlight as i'd like ..... the midtones and shadows are perfect, very silvery, almost metallic looking in the midtones .... i also noticed that the 3d relief effect was much less than when it was wet --guess that's a typical thing, tho, since the gelatin must be swelled up a lot when wet ..... also, notice the gray streaking in the sky--i'm guessing that's drifting pigment? ........ does this indicate insufficient washing (and maybe more washing would eliminate it)? ..... or is it insufficient clearing during development? -- i'm guessing the latter, and there's nothing to be done about it now
