The subject is the long-suffering Emmett, my son. The effect is a matte overlay, and that's what I'm not sure of. I like it, but it also seems overdone. Even though Photrio members are not the primary audience I imagine for such a work, I thought I would solicit some opinions. Does it work?
@pentaxuser More simply, it's a filter that abstracts an image in various degrees from reality. Most matte images are flat (as is this one). Various matte filters might also include colors (as you point out, this one does too) but those colors are washed-out (note that the original image was grayscale). Some associate it (and recommend it) as a fine-art technique. I guess I'm searching for a "signature look," but I'm not sure if I'd want to use it on every portrait I produce. Anyway, many, if not most, of the images I see here on Photrio are concerned with realistic portrayal of their subjects, including mine, and some of my hesitance in adopting the matte look is based on that perception.
Thanks Ken It sounds as if this is a digital filter that acts on a scan and not one that is produced in a darkroom on silver gelatin paper. Is this correct?
@pentaxuser That's correct. I don't have an enlarger; I do all my stuff on film, but I start by scanning negatives that I develop in my upstairs bathroom (somewhat to my wife's dismay lol).
