Cambodian Baby Tool Kok Slum Phnom Penh, Cambodia 1999

This photo is a bit older (1999) but I thought I would post something a bit different. I made it on one of my visa run trips from Thailand to Cambodia. It was shot in a slum area of Phnom Penh, near a number of brothels and other run down shops and homes. The baby was held by an older lady (grandmom?).

I think I might go this direction in the future, the plan is to use 2 Nikon F5 cameras with a 20-35mm F2.8 zoom (used for this photo) and a 35-70mm F2.8 along with Tri-x film.

Thank you, it was such a poor area, they lived in this dirty shack that was next to a busy dirt road(lots of heavy vehicle traffic). I would like to go back there someday and give the photo to the family, if they are still around.

great shot on so many levels, the old ladys hand ,the stare of the young baby, and the look of uncertainty in the young girl in the background all add up to one really intertesting photo.........frank

Hands!
An old one that supports and protects a baby. The baby's that contrasts the old and points out the child. The child in the background with a hand to lips in uncertainty or curiosity? Good moment great capture, (good skin tones)

The contrast between old and young is very good, and shows that in an area of disparity, such as the one you visited, there is hope to one day be old and have a family to belong to. That seems to be what the hand symbolizes.
On a different note - the disparity is obvious, and it raises a lot of questions of what the world ought to be like. It's a great portrait of many different things, Gerry, and I feel this is very strong work.

Late to the party here, but this is truly a wonderful image on many levels. Great capture of an interesting scene that provokes, and strikes many chords within in wondering more about this family. Documentary photography at it's finest. Reminds me somewhat of Don McCullin. Very well printed as well.
