Cairn, Buttermilk Falls

6x6cm silver gelatin contact print

I usually arrive at this location just after sunrise but hiked in on a whim during the early afternoon. The sun was peaking into the gorge just as we arrived. I had about 10 minutes to work and then it was gone... While the light lasted that stack of rocks made me feel like I was in some surreal little temple...

I tried to keep the feeling of bright afternoon sun hitting those black rocks as best I could, it was so bright you could barely look at it. The Tmax held the details but prints I made with more burning looked dead and lifeless so I'm going with this version.

Thank you, Dan. I burned the highlights enough to bring them down from paper white but burning enough to bring full detail in the really hot spots (using various grades) just seemed to muddy things up. My buddy Scott (who's a great printer) saw it in person and thought it was appropriate so I think I'll be done fretting about it. =) Also, I did not know the word "cairn" until you posted. I've learned something new and altered my title so thanks again!

Nice job Shawn. The white highlights seem appropriate to the blindingly bright scene and I almost squint looking at it! I also like the shadowed triangles in the opposing corners, which kind of echo the flow of water. Lots of movement in the image with the stack of rocks as an anchor.

Looking good Shawn ... Seems you re in an excellent place ...
