Butchered Neg Carrier

I took a neg carrier drilled, cut and dremmeled it out and then filled it back with clear 5 min epoxy. This and the other image don't show the full extent of the hacking but give an idea of the effect. The cool thing about it was that it could create a lovely contrast to the image -- as I think it does here -- and it made for one more choice when creating the photograph.

I apologize for the crap copy work. The print was shot with my pappies' Minolta DSLR using a make shift copy stand -- the floor with dueling halogens as I shot from above.

Nice use of the tungsten film for a night shot, again! Love the sky color and perspective in the shot.

One trick to working with epoxy, you can use fillers and additives to modify flow characteristics, color and u.v. resistence. For a harder batch, use powdered aluminum or colloidal silica (wear a respirator), for u.v. resistence and opacity, use powdered graphite. All kinds of things you can do with the hardware store type of epoxy to play with properties. Mix hardener first, then additives. tim

Yep, epoxy can be big fun. As a kid I used to build wooden model airplanes and would heat the epoxy to get a viscosity that would allow it to be painted on smooth. Later I would add pigments and use it in art objects. In the neg carrier instance I made a square out of mat board that was the size of the 6x6 frame plus some rebate. I put a little wax on the board and packed the epoxy between the mat board and the modified carrier. When the epoxy hardened it was a simple matter to remove the mat board.
