This is an idea that I have had for a few years now. I imagine a whole exhibition of stereo views with individual stereoscopes instead of framed photographs.
I love this idea. I saw a daguerreotype show and there were these elaborate antique viewers for some of the scenic dags. Some much effort for a single view..very cool. How are you calibrating these..? Do you have 2 'blads rubberbanded together?
If you're thinking of the show I am, at Peer Gallery around Oct-Nov 2006 or PhotoNY in Oct, that was one of my teachers who set up the vintage stereoscopes. He actually took on an alias and worked in the style of Timothy O'Sullivan, USGS photographers, etc. Some of the work is here ( http://www.artnet.com/artist/424597976/timothy-eugene-otower.html ) and his website is ( http://timedia.com/ ). He also made up antique-looking journals to accompany the images.
Anyway, I like the idea too of stereoscopes rather than frames for an exhibition.
I put the camera on a tripod and made the first picture. I then measured out 2 1/2-inches from two of the tripod legs in the direction I needed to move the camera for the second picture. I put stones where I need to place the tripod legs, and moved the who rig over. I made sure that everything was as best aligned as I could, and made the second neg. I have been looking for a 120 stereo camera for a few months now.
I kept the left as the left because I don't cross my eyes when I look at these. I focus my eyes further off in space until the two pictures come together. Have since made these both ways, but the stereo effect is dependent on how you look at them.
One of the reasons I became interested in making 2 1/2 contacts in the first place was due to seeing a stereo half by Carlton Watkins in a show at the Getty a few years ago.
I am dreaming about doing a "Modern Views of the West" project using the stereo viewer-- One of these days . . .
