I think that the negative has been printed backwards originally. Look at the plaque on the wheel of the ship. Font is justified to the right. ???

Hmm, you could be right. When scanning these I made a mask to fit in the 4 x 5 film holders on a V700. The negs were taped to the under side of the mask, I think with the emulsion side facing down. I may have mixed up a few of them. I've just gone back to the original 1200 dpi scans of the negs and it's very hard to read any text on the ships wheel.

The printing is centered on the plaque. Notice the breast pocket on the man in back and the orientation of the boy's flies.
