Does your documentary have any sub-theme? After the fact, as a second guesser, I will say that if the man's head had a lighter background some might consider the photo improved.
My documentary project involved inner city neighborhoods of Cleveland, primarily the Collinwood and Glenville neighborhoods. The main subjects were African-American youths. I tried to emphasize the dignity and strength of the residents of the neighborhoods. Sometimes I use harsh contrasty lighting in an attempt to add a dramatic feel, but as you say, that can be risky. I also did a documentary on the Amish, both projects are on my web gallery.
very nice, like the feel of being in that place with the young man. There is also the spirit of youth that the ball and eyes help convey. Am looking forward to seeing more work from this project.
